Tai Wai Nullah*

Tai Wai Nullah is upper stream of Shing Mun River located in Tai Wai, which is an artificial channel completed in early 1970s when Sha Tin New Town begin to develop. The purpose of the nullah is prevent flooding, to speed up the river discharge and to facilitate the maintenance of the river. So the riverbeds and embankments around the nullah use concrete as materials and the nullah use straight line design. However, this environment is not suitable for wildlife since there have a lot of trash and looks dirty, which affect residents daily life.

The new design provide large space allow people to play and gathering together. The existing side soccer pitch will turn into two basketball court that looks like Sunken Plaza. It not just fulfill nearby residents need, it can provide flood control system to manage storm water. During the heavy rain and typhoon, the water from Tai Wai Nullah can deliver to that area to store water, so it can make the river not easy to have flooding problem occur. After the rain, the water can slowly release to the river, so the basketball court can allow people to use again.

Meanwhile, two existing bridge replace with one large bridge, it have a large shading area on the bridge for sitting. Besides, the new platform provides a Dog garden since many Tai Wai residents agree that the area lack of this facilities. The garden provides different experience for the dog to play, such as small pool, interactive fountain and play facilities.

Furthermore, there will have several floating islands next to the riderside. The island will have small wetland, so it can enhance habitat diversity along the river.
